The Project

The Prairie View A&M Capital Improvements Project aimed to extend the useful life of several campus buildings while ensuring they met current ADA/TAS accessibility and life safety standards. The scope included improvements to academic buildings, athletic facilities, and public safety infrastructure. Each building received tailored upgrades, from mechanical systems and roofing replacements to accessibility improvements and modernized fire safety features.

The Methodology

WestEast took a phased approach to the project, beginning with the Taylor and Delco academic buildings, where air handlers, hydronic piping, and other interior improvements were made. The William J. Nicks athletic facility saw extensive upgrades to its fire suppression systems, locker rooms, and entrance, while exterior skins of all buildings were renovated to improve longevity. For the Public Safety Building, WestEast addressed physical security measures while adhering to the Texas Police Chiefs Association's standards, ensuring both safety and budget balance.

The Result

Through methodical planning and execution, WestEast successfully modernized the Prairie View A&M facilities, improving safety, accessibility, and functionality. The upgraded systems extend the buildings’ life, while aesthetic and functional improvements to key areas like the Nicks Building lobby and locker rooms enhance the user experience. The Public Safety Building now meets recognized standards, providing a safer and more secure environment for students and staff.

“They did an excellent job with our Campus clients who inhabited the buildings being renovated, by evaluating and validating the program information and helping to resolve discrepancies between the program and budget. WestEast was sensitive to our schedule while actively participating in the contractor’s cost model to bring the project into budget while remaining sensitive to the Campus priorities.”
