The Project

WestEast collaborated with University Health System (UHS) to renovate and expand the existing Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), creating a 4,400 SF space. The design included 11 warmers, one isolation room, a family room, and a formula preparation room, all aimed at providing a family-centered, collaborative healing environment. The goal was to create a space that supported both patient care and family involvement while promoting a calm, efficient atmosphere for the medical staff.

The Methodology

WestEast conducted extensive coordination meetings with NICU user groups, including the head doctor and nurse, to understand the care model and necessary medical equipment. The design process included incorporating evidence-based strategies focused on creating family-centered healing environments. A pinwheel layout was chosen to maximize patient capacity while ensuring privacy for families and maintaining clear sightlines for the nursing staff. The space was further enhanced with natural and artificial lighting, modular glass walls, acoustic treatments, and calming décor to promote a peaceful environment for both staff and families.

The Result

The renovated NICU successfully balanced the needs of patients, families, and caregivers. The pinwheel design created private zones for skin-to-skin breastfeeding and family care while maintaining functional works paces for staff. The environment was optimized for healing through carefully selected materials, lighting, and design elements, offering a serene space that encouraged family participation in the newborn's care. The phased construction allowed adjacent spaces to remain operational throughout the renovation, ensuring minimal disruption to hospital operations.
