The Project

Located in San Antonio’s historic Dignowity Hill neighborhood, the Ella Austin Community Center has long been a key resource for the local community, providing essential services since the 1970s. Originally built in 1923 as a Junior High School, the facility was later transformed into a community hub serving residents from childhood through senior years. However, the center’s infrastructure had deteriorated, presenting challenges like outdated classrooms, code violations, and poor accessibility. In response, the City of San Antonio initiated a $23 million revitalization project, funded by a combination of Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone (TIRZ) funds and bond funding approved by San Antonio voters on May 7, 2022. WestEast was engaged to lead the effort to modernize the facility while preserving its historic significance.

The Methodology

Community engagement was central to the design process. Through small group meetings and public sessions, WestEast worked with stakeholders to identify the community’s priorities, which included enhanced children’s programming, improved accessibility, and upgraded facilities across the site, organized around a new central courtyard. The input from these sessions helped shape a flexible, community-driven renovation plan that addressed the center’s current needs while remaining sensitive to its historical roots.

The revitalization project encompasses a range of spaces to better meet the diverse needs of the community. In addition to expanding and improving the childcare facilities, the ground floor will house a new teen space, a grand entry lobby, and a renovated auditorium. The second floor is dedicated to community services, adult training, flexible meeting rooms, and offices for non-profits. Another key element is the reimagined cafeteria, which will serve as a gathering space for large events and provide a welcoming environment for seniors accessing the adjacent senior center.

The Result

At the heart of the project is the redesigned childcare center, featuring improved classrooms that meet modern code requirements and enhanced safety measures. Working within the historic structure’s constraints, WestEast optimized natural light and circulation to create a bright, welcoming environment for children. These updates not only improve the functionality of the space but also promote sustainability and energy efficiency.

Ella Austin’s revitalization is a testament to the importance of community collaboration and thoughtful design. By blending history with modern amenities, this project ensures that the center will continue to serve as a vital resource for future generations, supporting growth and unity within the Dignowity Hill neighborhood.
