The Project

The project involved the construction of a 74,000-square-foot,three-story educational and administrative facility for San Antonio College. It houses six academic departments, including Business, Foreign Languages, Philosophy, Continuing Education, Computer Technology, and CE Management offices. The building's design aimed to address the college's growing need for modern instructional spaces, providing a hub for both academic and administrative functions. End-user coordination meetings and presentations to oversight committees ensured the design met the needs of the college, while engineering disciplines such as civil, MEP, and telecom data systems were carefully integrated.

The Methodology

The methodology focused on creating a flexible, efficient space that maximized student interaction with the environment. Exterior stairways were included to encourage movement and connection between students and the outdoors. The building was designed with state-of-the-art technology in common spaces to support spontaneous student collaboration, study sessions, and quiet work environments. Flexibility in office and classroom configurations allowed for easy adaptation to future needs without affecting the utility infrastructure.

The Result

The result was a functional and cost-effective facility completed on time and under budget. WestEast Design Group’s careful planning and cost-saving measures resulted in over $400,000 in value-engineered savings, which were returned to the college. The final design not only supported the specific curricula on each floor but also seamlessly blended modern educational needs with the natural environment, creating a cohesive and inspiring space for learning.

“The proposed design for the new academic building is in my opinion very good. The building as proposed will complement the campus context. It is composed, sited, and fenestrated with great sophistication and (is) finely proportioned.”
