The Project

The Fort Sam Houston Area Development Plan update involved creating a comprehensive plan for two districts within the military installation. The project required a deep understanding of the base's historic significance, its needs, and the impact on the City of San Antonio. The focus was on sustainment, restoration, and modernization funding to align with changing mission requirements.

The Methodology

WestEast Design Group, in collaboration with The Urban Collaborative and HDR, led the planning and programming effort for the Fort Sam Houston Master Area Development Plan update. The design team worked closely with the Joint Base San Antonio (JBSA) and engaged in meetings with planning personnel and stakeholders. Through a week long charrette, they reviewed and updated the vision statement, analyzed constraints, defined district boundaries, and developed planning alternatives in compliance with installation master planning guidelines.

The Result

The preferred solution for both districts in the Master Area Development Plan update included a Capacity Analysis, building condition assessment, and prioritization based on building risk. The plan also outlined the overall program, considering the existing building configurations and parking areas. By focusing on sustainment, restoration, and modernization funding, the project aimed to meet the evolving needs of Fort Sam Houston and align with the goals of the JBSA. The updated plan provided a roadmap for future development that would enhance the functionality and historical significance of the military installation.
