The Project

IKEA U.S. Small Home is a pioneering project aimed at addressing the housing needs of people experiencing homelessness. By collaborating with IKEA, the project integrates trauma-informed design principles to create affordable, easily replicable homes that promote human wellness. The project’s goals include designing homes that meet the specific needs of those overcoming homelessness, incorporating sustainability standards, and educating IKEA employees on trauma-informed care. Additionally, it aims to influence national policy regarding affordable housing by demonstrating innovative, replicable solutions.

The Methodology

The methodology involved close collaboration with IKEA’s experts in interiors, sustainability, and engineering to create the “cocoon” concept. This design was informed by research on PTSD, providing a safe, retreat-like space while also offering an open area for community engagement. Definitions of home and scale were explored, with designs tested through a mockup built at IKEA’s Live Oak store in San Antonio. The mockup was evaluated by twenty individuals experiencing homelessness, who provided valuable feedback that will be incorporated into the final design.

The Result

The feedback from the initial trials will shape a final version of the home, which will be donated to a permanent supportive housing community in San Antonio. The project also includes ongoing research on the post-occupancy human performance of the tenants who live in the home.
