The Project

The City of San Marcos undertook the development of two new fire stations, Fire Station 2 and Fire Station 6, to enhance emergency response capabilities ingrowing and underserved areas. Fire Station 2 replaced a 63-year-old structure, significantly upgrading its functionality and accessibility. Located on Old Bastrop Road, this 15,000-square-foot, two-story facility now serves as acritical hub for the local fire department. Meanwhile, Fire Station 6 addresses the needs of a fast-growing region, providing similar services in a15,000-square-foot, two-story building designed to support the expanding community's demands. Both stations feature essential amenities such as apparatus bays, dispatch areas, sleeping quarters, kitchens, and administrative spaces.

The Methodology

WestEast worked closely with the San Marcos Fire Department to tailor each fire station’s design based on the feedback from firefighters, ensuring functionality was optimized. Fire Station 2, featuring 12,000 square feet of operational space on the first floor and a 3,000-square-foot mezzanine for mechanical and electrical systems, prioritized quick vehicle access and efficient emergency response. Fire Station 6’s design, inspired by Station 2,was adapted to meet the unique infrastructural needs of its location, including extending water main and sanitary lines. These adaptations were essential to ensuring that both stations could seamlessly support the fire department's operational requirements.

The Result

Both Fire Station 2 and Fire Station 6 are modern, highly functional facilities that greatly improve emergency response times and overall service delivery for the City of San Marcos. Fire Station 2 now provides critical emergency services to an underserved area, ensuring faster and more reliable response to emergencies. Fire Station 6 similarly enhances the city’s capabilities in a rapidly growing region, with improvements that accommodate both current and future community needs. The two stations stand as vital infrastructure, reflecting careful planning and collaboration between WestEast and the local fire department to address both immediate and long-term operational goals.
