WestEast Design Group has joined New Mexico firm Muller Heller to design the new Gateway Shelter for the City of Albuquerque. The 90,000 SF facility will provide housing and services for those experiencing homelessness. The Programming and Concept Design was completed in 2022 and involved meetings with stakeholders, service providers and the operator. The facility is adjacent to a multitude of allied health services and organizations, as well as a new Medical Respite and Medical Sobering facility.
The first floor will accommodate a wide variety of services, a dining room and outdoor garden spaces. The second floor is housing and communal spaces designed for men, and the third floor for women and families. The fourth and fifth floors are planned for Permanent Supportive Housing.
Trauma Informed Design strategies and research findings from the needs of the diverse local population have been incorporated into the concept design.
